November 11, 2017.

Located at 2323 Defoor Hills Road, this is the second home to the brewery. Just like the original, and true to the name, we find this building to also be constructed from red brick!

The brewery has a relaxed feel and welcoming environment. Long communal tables are set up to encourage socialization while college football games play on the walls. Amidst the televisions and company decorations, the brewery is also adorned with local artwork. The pleasant environment is further enhanced by a welcoming, knowledgeable staff. Team members are available behind the bar or out on the floor, prepared to answer any and all questions a customer could have.

*Fun fact- none of the team members had seen the “Weird Coleslaw” Ad until we showed them!
</text>

              <text>Thank you for understanding the special place Manuel's holds in a lot of our hearts. Manuel was present at all of my fundraisers and events except for my race for U.S. Congress (he had passed two years before the race). I was honored when one of his sons placed my bumper sticker on the office door, along with other mid-1990's artifacts (Atlanta 1996 Olympics, Gov. Zell Miller stickers, etc.).

When I heard they were "changing" Manuel's I tried to buy the whole door! Manuel's son assured me that the door was safe, and would be included in the renovation. Manuel's was the kind of place you could let your hair down a bit. I developed long friendships with many of the press corps there, which made understanding my work in the legislature easier for them, I think. It also emboldened me, knowing that they were there to expose any abuses of the process (or of young legislators) by the powers that were.

I occasionally come through Atlanta, and I try to make it on Tuesday evenings so that I can gather with the old crowd, or what is left of them.</text>

              <text>
Virtual Reality is all the rage these days. It’s easy to scoff at all the hype, but until you try the new technology, you can’t fully comprehend the experience. Cheap and readily available devices like Google Cardboard, while not providing as powerful an immersive experience as more expensive headsets like the Oculus Rift, have allowed anyone with a smartphone to watch VR content. Last November, the New York Times sent Google Cardboard to over a million of their subscribers. They continue to create and collect VR content on their nytvr app. Much of the content from NYT and their competitors is compelling, but much of it is just “neat” and can wear thin fairly quickly. With any new media it’s hard to figure out how, when, and why to use the new technology.

Georgia State University’s Student Innovation Fellowship program recently purchased a 7 GoPro VR video rig, and we wanted to experiment with how, when, and why to use the new device. Manuel’s Tavern was a couple of weeks from reopening, and because of our connection to the Unpacking Manuel’s project, tavern owner Brian Maloof agreed to show us some of the changes to the bar. We felt like a tour was the perfect way to test the rig because it would be fun to explore the renovated space in 360. When Maloof points to the playing cards still on the ceiling, the camera doesn’t pan. The viewer has to actually look up. When you hear hammering behind you, you can turn around to see what ‘s going on. Documentary filmmaker Ruth Dusseault did the shoot with Mat Munson, Alec Leverett, and Gerrett DeHart, GSU multimedia designers from the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

They set up in five locations, as Maloof explains some of the decisions made in the renovation. Over the next week, the multimedia team stitched and edited the video. It’s a new process, so you will see a few glitches, but we are excited about the finished project. The Tavern is now open. With our video you can get a sense of the construction process, and as we continue work on the Unpacking Manuel’s project, you will be able to explore the bar before the renovation. You can watch the video on a computer and pan the video with your cursor, or watch on your phone and actually move in the direction you want to look. Most mobile devices will allow you to use a VR
</text>

              <text>During my four terms in the Georgia House of Representatives, Manuel's served as a refuge where journalists and office holders and office seekers could sit down and discuss the goings on under the state capitol's gold dome. As an reformer Democrat who had challenged my own party and the powerful Speaker Thomas B. Murphy, it was at times my only refuge.

By 1995, I decided to celebrate my unpopularity under the Gold Dome by holding a fundraiser that embraced it, indicating that my only remaining friends were my three dogs, and that they were coming from Ringgold to host my fundraiser. My campaign t-shirt that year featured "Betty" the black lab mix with an extremely long tongue, which had on it: "Put it this way... your dog would vote for him." This was an obvious reference to the infamous service dog bill fiasco, an attempt by Speaker Murphy to punish me for my many sins, which resulted in the Speaker breaking down and crying in the well of the House floor after trying to ban my disabled page and his black lab Suzie from the House floor where they were serving as my page.

It was my most popular t-shirt and was worn at a show by the band "Cake". Having lived in Athens during law school, I was always intrigued by the homemade band posters, which often looked like little more than ransom notes clipped out of newspapers and magazines. I was an incumbent, but raising funds as the ultimate outsider, so I copied this style. It was the most fun fundraiser that I ever had.

http://bettergeorgia.libsyn.com/63-interview-with-mccracken-poston</text>
